I recently rediscovered the joys of the pure sounds of a clean (most of the time) Fender Stratocaster, played with a little reverb and delay. These recordings done usually late in the evening, are me and my Strat and a Boss JamMan looper pedal, recorded using the voice recordings app on my iPhone placed across the room. Most of the tracks are one-take improvisations, quickly recording a loop then seeing what emerges playing over the top. One thing this highlights for me is that keeping things simple is the best way to let the creativity flow. As drummer Vincent Colaiuta said, “Thought is the enemy of flow”. And I know that even GarageBand forces me to think!
